I’ve always told people who want to learn things about BDSM, get in touch with your local BDSM community. Get in touch with people during a munch or a party and not just through the web-based BDSM community. When you socialize with people you get access to an arena where you can learn a lot from the experiences of other people.
But there is an other thing to do as well; Get hold of as many books as you can!
Yes, I am a geek and a book buff, I admit to my crime…I am a nerd.
When you read this some of you might think that there is a lot of information available on the web (otherwise you wouldn’t have bumped into this blog). If you have this thought spinning around in your head now, I totally agree with you. But there are some pros with a book compared to stuff you find on the web and validity is the biggest one. It’s true that anyone can print a book these days, but most books usually go through a review process which is done either by the editor or the readers that have bought the books before you. Books that have been on the market for a couple of years are acknowledged by the community and well established. The authors have to vouch for the information that they provide in a different way compared to providing information on the web – Information in a book tend to exist for a very long time compared to information on the web where it’s even hard to figure out where the information originates from. Authors of a book usually have to take on a different responsibility on what they offer through their writings.
The format of a book also makes it easier to give more in-depth information compared to things you read on the computer screen in front of you when you access a website.
Books are a good complement to all the information you will get through your local BDSM community and the online community. One of the first things you need to do when you start getting into BDSM is to build up your ability to judge all the information you are given – You need to compare different sources against each other.
Any recommendations for books?
One of my standing recommendations is SM101 by Jay Wiseman – A book which covers a lot of different aspects of both the lifestyle and techniques.
Then it all depends on what your interests are.
