BDSM toys can be really expensive and some expensive toys out there are really flimsy and cheap in quality compared to how much you pay for them.
There are also some drawbacks when you buy toys from an ordinary sex toy webshop:
- You are unable to feel the quality by holding/touching the product you are planning to buy
- Most “general BDSM toys” (cuffs, restraints etc) are made for the average submissive – And in some cases for people that have the same bodies as a supermodel. To be honest the general population i.e. submissives don’t have those measurements. So the fit of a toy can become a problem.
- Security issues might arise as you are unable to judge the quality of a specific BDSM toy. Who wants a sex swing to come lose from its fixtures while the submissive is restrained in it? It is not uncommon that BDSM toys and sex toys are mass-produced in the Far East and that will usually have an effect on the manufacturing quality.
- You usually get what you pay for – Cheap toys are usually cheap in quality.
If you want to handle all the points above then there are a couple of ways to do it. Contact your local leather worker. They have the experience and skills to build custom made cuffs that will have build quality and will fit your submissive perfectly. An expensive solution as handmade products are more expensive compared to massproduced. But it can be worth it, as they will last longer and enables you as a dominant to brag about the fact that you designed the cuffs yourself.
What if you are on a limited budget, like most of us are? Well, then you have to train your crafting skills. There are multitudes of BDSM toy making projects available on the web. It will probably take some trial and error to succeed if you are not educated in crafting, but most projects have good building instructions and advices – That increases the probability of success.
The pros when building yourself are that you will get them custom made, as safe as you build them and you are able to test the safety measures while you build them. And then you can brag about the fact that you have designed your own toys and built them as well! If you are specific about details in training and that everything should be perfectly executed and prepared – Then building your own BDSM toys is definatly for you.
An excellent idea could actually be to let your submissive build them for you as a part of the training.
Here are some good places to start with if you want to build your own BDSM toys:
The Master toy maker
Domina’s shopping and home manufacturing tips
These links have projects that range from beginner level to experienced toy making, but it will surely be satisfactory when you as a dominant, or your sub have built your first toy.
Let us know if you have built anything on your own that you use in your BDSM scenes.
Well I can’t imagine making the toys or cuffs myself, i’m not creative enough and i think making things from scratch would probably cost as much as getting it handmade, saving your money and putting time into that would be better i think, then the money is the level you can buy to,
And yes naturally you get what you pay for..
“an excellent Idea”? lol me thinks not, not unless you want them made of paper rings
Some BFSM groups also sponsor toy making workshops.
A wonderful way to meet people, build skills, or (if you discover you have 10 thumbs) learn to know what you need in your toys and meet possible crafters.
I have become a “McGyver” of sex toys. I have a gifted and perverse imagination that is only fueled by the female body and its possibilities. For cuffs, you’d be surprised at how versatile zip ties can be. A large bag is cheap, they’re disposable, and you can make them loose enough that you can easily clip them off with a pair of scissors near the bed. If you get a big enough bag, or two, you can link them together to get some really creative bondage. Making them comfortable is not too hard either. Wash an old pair of socks, pull them, and mould them to your sub as buffers for longer wear.
Colored rubberband hair ties. I friggin’ love em. Great for nipples or just that quick, sharp, snap against the skin.
Paperclips! Not nearly as hardcore as clothespins, but very effective at pinching the nipple or clit…or anywhere…if you don’t over bend them. I would avoid the large “office binder” clips….WAY to strong…but that’s me. If I used one of those on Empty, even with her pain threshhold, she’d freak.
A disposable electric lighter. Take the shroud off, take out the clicker part, and toss the fuel tank (not into a fire unless you want a small boom). The clicker has a short, pointed, metal part on it. When you click, out jumps an electric arc. Good for those sensitive areas and great when mixed with the rubberbands….
Mountain climbing style keychains! These things are great if you mix them with the zip ties. Make your cuffs, then mix in one of these. Your sub is easily uncuffed or recuffed without the need for clipping the zip ties with scissors.
A cheap knit cloth neck tie. Yeah, you’ve all seen them…usually found on sales people in some mall uniform. Take it, tie it in a knot so that you have even ends on both sides, stuff the knot into your subs mouth and tie the ends to the back of their head. Great gag! And shouldn’t cost much. A bandana works pretty good for this too.
Potato chip bag clips! Can make great nipple clamps for the beginner. Not too rough and easily removed.
Halls Cough Drops or Altoids Mints. Pop one of those into your mouth and go down on your partner. Seat belt in, because the ride is going to be good.
A gas torch, black van, an old fence, a Colt M-60, a cigar, and 600lbs of cheap gold jewelery…oh wait, that was an old A-Team episode….nevermind….
OH…I almost forgot….COLLARS! I’ve noticed a ton of collars with extremely cheap quality….or at the very least, “not getting what you paid for” quality.
While getting my RL cat some treats, I walked past the the collar section at the local PetCo. Holy crap…here were some of the same designs, only better made and nearly 70% cheaper. Now, some might scoff at putting the sub in a collar made for a pet…but look at how good we treat our pets and then look at the quality of some of the collars out there…then tell me I’m wrong. Empty is going to get one of those almost as soon as she steps off the plane. And they also come with matching leashes.
You can go to dollar store or any cheap hardware store to make toys much cheaper and better then buying stuff at stores stuff you buy at stores or online can be very high dollar or has been sitting in the store for many yrs.
D, i think it depends on what you are buying, and the skill one can bring to handcrafting. Cheap tools can be well made, or not so well; and if the latter, can break or wear out or more importantly offer more risk to the sub and Dom. Inadvertently hurting or marking a submissive beyond intention can be a relationship-ender or worse.
That said –
please if you have specific ideas to share, it would be a pleasure; some of us find especial pleasure in using tools we made or found in non BDSM contexts, or customized.
True it all depends what you are buying. If you don’t wanna spend much money or have alot. Why try to go & waste so much at a sex store? They are expensive. And some edibles have been sitting around a long time on those shelfs. Look at the dates etc…It’s better & best you make your own toys if you don’t wanna spend alot. I priced stuff at a few toy stores they are not cheap ! You can find great deals oline also. Just be careful. Even discounts at sex toy stores does no good. They can still be high. They only take a dollar or three dollars off an item at the most. :0 Thought that would be some good ideas.
I like to design my own leather tong and rope restraints. I use o-rings, d-rings, plastic & metal hooks and leather snap tabs. I love creating intricate geometric shapes, using the subs body as my ‘canvas’. The resulting imprisonment is impossible to escape from and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Could you send me some pictures of your creation – That would be really interesting to take a look at and then do a post on it.
