Jay Wiseman has for many years debated about the dangers of the advanced breath play and asphyxiation play. He has received much criticism from some parts of the BDSM community for his strong position. How he has been criticized is in many ways remarkable. First of all, Jay Wiseman has worked as a paramedic for many years and is thus well-trained in emergency medicine, and secondly, he has a significant amount of experience in medicine.
It becomes very clear that some parts of the BDSM community consider that it isn’t risk that is the greatest danger, it is plain and simple knowledge. Knowledge should of course always be discussed because the quality of the knowledge and its influence is dependent on the context in which it is applied. BDSM is associated with a risk, and it is up to each and everyone how far they want to go in their risk taking but to ignore the risks is, in my opinion, a dangerous strategy and to assert that there aren’t any risks involved based on sheer ignorance is nothing but stupidity in its purest form.
More people in the BDSM community should listen to those who have experiences based on years of practice, formal training and who have made mistakes themselves, because the experience lies in the mistakes.
With experience comes knowledge and with knowledge comes the realization that there are risks in everything we do, personally, I like to take a calculated risk, but I would never take a risk based on pure stupidity, it isn’t what my submissive has deserved and in the end it is her life and health that I am responsible for. She holds me to high standards, she expects me to be well versed in what I’m doing to her, she expects me to explicitly express if I am trying to learn something new while doing it to her. If I do not express my lack of experience in certain areas, then I am also effectively removing her ability to make an informed decision and that might put us both in harm’s way.
Who are you responsible for, yourself or your submissive?
